The Crown of Halacha

V’eschanan 5777 – What is Your Reason Why?

This entry is part 2 of 4 in the series Devarim 5777

What is Your Reason Why?

“You shall know this day and take to your heart that Hashem, He is God – in heaven above and on earth below – there is none other.” Devarim 4:39.

Hashem Wants our Hearts!

One can know something intellectually but the knowledge doesn’t necessarily become rooted in his heart. Why not?

Bullseye!

In order to win the Princess’s hand in marriage, the king decided on a contest. “The best archer in the land will marry my daughter!”

When the greatest archer in the king’s army took the king up on his offer all others withdrew from the contest except for a poor peasant who could barely hold the bow straight. Everyone in the kingdom knew how this contest would end since it was obvious that the peasant was unskilled in archery. “Why waste time on this contest? Let the archer and the Princess get married!”

However, the King was impressed by the peasant’s desire to win so he allowed the contest to go forward.

The professional archer stood very far from the target, drew his bow back and let the arrow fly. It landed only a half an inch from a perfect bull’s-eye!

The peasant knew he didn’t have the same training as the archer but he did have a very great desire to marry the Princess.  He walked right up to the target, aimed his bow and shot a perfect bull’s-eye. He beat the archer because his “Why” was greater than his “How”.

A Pure Heart Can Raise a Person Above Nature

The Lekach Tov explains the belief “there is none other” is called emunah shleima. From this week’s Torah reading we learn that the Torah commands us to make a daily spiritual accounting in order to reach this level. That is why it says, “You shall know this day..”. At this level, we become aware that there is no such thing as cause and result. Even the most talented person is not guaranteed success and this is all the more so if he relies in some way on his talent. Everything depends on the “heart”. This is the purpose of prayer and avodah is only to strengthen our realization that Hashem runs the world!

Is Your “Why” Greater than Your “How”?

Like the professional archer, many times we have the right goal but we focus mainly on our part in reaching it.We are convinced that our talent is an integral part. Nothing can be farther from the truth! Talent will only get a person so far in life. It’s the “Why” that gives a person the ability to go beyond himself and accomplish his goal.

If you have your “Why” firmly anchored in your heart then reach your goal with everything you’ve got.

Hashem will help you with the “How”!
